What it looks like
One of the most respectable products of Italian charcuterie.
Until somebody does something stupid.
What it means
It means you are an idiot. Often, however, an idiot people are still rather fond of.
Salame is a remarkably diplomatic Italian insult: it does not describe an evil person, just someone who has done something so foolish that they temporarily deserve to become cured meat.
Locked the keys in the car? Salame. Booked the flight for the wrong day? Sei proprio un salame.
The important point: salame condemns the performance, not necessarily the person.
The salame scale
“Ma sei un salame!” while laughing = affection.
“Guarda che salame…” = pity.
“SALAME!” shouted from a car window = diplomacy has ended.
How to read it
A salame is an idiot without malice.
That is the wonderfully Italian part: one of the country’s most noble foods is used to tell someone that, for a few minutes, their contribution to human evolution has been negligible.
If an Italian calls you salame, do not panic immediately. It may almost be affection. Almost.
