Understanding the language is only half the job.
Allora. was not created to teach Italian. It was created to explore everything that begins once grammar has already been learned: tone, context, habits, gestures and the small unwritten rules that make a sentence mean much more — or much less — than the words themselves.
It is a non-dictionary: a collection of everyday words, expressions and situations observed not in search of the perfect translation, but to understand what is really happening when an Italian uses them.
Sometimes the best way to understand how peculiar your own habits are is to try explaining them to someone who does not share them.
Where it came from
Allora. grew out of foreigners’ questions about Italy, everyday misunderstandings and all those moments when the most honest explanation inevitably began with:
“Yes, I know. But that’s just how we do it.”
The book was the starting point. The website is where the project can continue.
