Try asking an Italian what boh really means.
You will discover that there is no single answer.
Perhaps because boh is not a word. It is a tool.
Italians use it constantly, but for different reasons.
Boh as suspension
It does not decide.
It does not conclude.
It leaves the question open.
Boh as disengagement
“Do not drag me into this.”
Boh as an invitation
“Dove andiamo?”
“Boh.”
Translation: you suggest something.
Boh does not stop the conversation. It passes the ball to the other person.
Boh as flexibility
Italians often do not feel the need to have a definitive opinion.
Tomorrow they may think differently and will not necessarily see that as a contradiction.
Boh becomes the symbol of a less rigid, less binary culture.
It is not indecision.
It is a willingness to change your mind.
Boh as a luxury
There are cultures in which not knowing is embarrassing.
In Italy, much less so.
An Italian can say boh to a friend, a professor, a client or even an expert.
Nobody will automatically assume they are incompetent.
Perhaps because conversation matters enormously in Italian culture, while the idea of always having the right answer matters rather less.
