What it really is
In many countries, when someone thanks you, a simple “you’re welcome” is enough.
In Italy, it often is not.
That is why we say figurati.
It is a way of playing down the favour you have just done. As if to say: it was no sacrifice, you do not owe me anything, between us there is not even any need to talk about it.
It does not erase the gesture. It erases the weight of the gesture.
It is a word that protects the balance of the relationship, preventing a simple favour from turning into a debt to be repaid.
