What it looks like
A swear word. One of the many colourful expressions Rome has perfected over the centuries.
What it really means
So what? Why should I care?
Rome has compressed a whole argument into two words: E sticazzi? It is not necessarily an insult. It is a recalibration procedure. You assign importance 87 to a fact. Rome checks it. Actual importance: 4. Case closed.
Careful, though
Outside Rome, Italians sometimes use sticazzi! to mean “Wow!” or “Damn!”. To a Roman, that sounds almost backwards.
For genuine amazement Rome has another technology: ME COJONI!
STICAZZI → irrelevance.
ME COJONI → amazement.
The key
Esticazzi? is not just “I don’t care”. It is an antidote to one of humanity’s oldest weaknesses: taking ourselves too seriously.
Rome listens, evaluates, raises one eyebrow and restores perspective.
Survival guide
If someone in Rome says “That guy earns twenty thousand euros a month”, do not answer sticazzi! unless you mean “I fail to see why this concerns me.” If you are impressed, try me cojoni!.
And do not return from one weekend in Trastevere speaking like a Roman film character.
In one line
The world: “Look how important I am.”
Rome: “Esticazzi?”
