听起来像什么
An orthopedic assessment.
“What’s the new sales guy like?”
“In gamba.”
A foreigner could reasonably wonder where else he was supposed to be.
In an arm? In his chest? Why specifically in a leg?
Fair questions. Questions an Italian will not answer.
For us, someone in gamba is simply someone who knows what they’re doing.
真正的意思
In gamba is one of the most understated Italian compliments and, for that very reason, one of the most serious.
It does not necessarily mean brilliant or phenomenal. It does not mean they reinvented quantum physics over lunch.
It means they work.
An in gamba person understands, solves problems and gets things moving. You can entrust them with something without immediately wanting to check what they are doing.
In Italy, where ci penso io can be either a promise or the beginning of a disaster, that is no small thing.
场景
“Have you met the new guy?”
“Yes.”
“What’s he like?”
A short pause.
“È in gamba.”
That’s it.
No fireworks. No amazing. No super talented.
And yet the verdict is perfectly clear.
If an Italian tells you that you are in gamba, you have just been approved.
Moderately, of course. We would not want it to go to your head.
理解关键
The interesting thing is that in gamba rewards more than competence.
It also contains a very Italian idea of being switched-on: understanding how the world works, improvising when necessary and not freezing at the first problem.
A doctor, mechanic, colleague, child, waiter—or the person who fixed your Wi-Fi after forty minutes of restarting the router—can all be in gamba.
Then there is stammi in gamba.
That changes everything.
It no longer means “you’re good.”
It means roughly: take care, hold your own, don’t do anything stupid and preferably come back in one piece.
Four ideas. One leg.
Italian linguistic efficiency.
