A rejeição amorosa italiana por excelência: uma carta de baralho que virou o diagnóstico oficial de uma esperança mal colocada.

IL DUE DI PICCHE

O que parece

A playing card with a particularly unfortunate reputation.

O que é de verdade

The official certificate that you understood one thing and the other person understood something very different.

In Italy, prendere un due di picche — “to get the two of spades” — means being romantically rejected. You do not need a relationship, or even a first date. You only need to have tried.

You texted. You invited. You flirted. You interpreted that 😂 as unmistakable evidence. Then comes: “You’re a wonderful person.” “I’m not looking for anything right now.” “I see you more as a friend.”

Due di picche.

Italian makes it wonderfully physical: you take a two of spades, as if it were a fine or a door in the face. And from the other side, someone can give you one.

De onde vem?

The expression comes from playing cards, where the two traditionally has very little value. Italian even has the expression valere quanto un due di picche: to be worth almost nothing.

From a low-value card to rejection is an easy metaphor: you arrive convinced you have a great hand, and somebody leaves you holding a two.

Italian regional card traditions also preserve expressions involving the two of cups or clubs, linked to refusal and low value. Long before dating apps, Italians had already turned rejection into a playing card.

A evolução da espécie

YESTERDAY: “I got a due di picche.”

TODAY: “I got friendzoned.”

They look like the same disaster. They are not. A due di picche only requires trying and being rejected. Being friendzoned requires a relationship that one person wants to make romantic while the other keeps it firmly in friendship territory.

The difference? The two of spades closes a door. The friendzone leaves it open.

But only so you can enter as a friend.
